Abstract
Typography is a language that we absorb every day, often subconsciously. The more time we spend in a place, the more we subtly consume its letterforms. We gather pieces of its identity in our minds. We give our surroundings a voice and add it to our own stories. Everyone interacts with their environment differently; no two voices are the same.
What does it mean to spend fifteen years in Baltimore? What is it about the letterforms of a city that inspires us to work with words? Loveletters explores these questions through both introspection and interview, in conversation with several local artists and designers who work with lettering and typography. The primary focus of this project is a printed zine that compiles personal narration, interviewee insight, photographic type specimens and traced letterforms into a hybrid journal-collage.
