Abstract

Research shows that the colors of food or packaging can affect a human’s appetite while they are eating. [f(x)Strange]Lab, a hypothetical start-up company, experiments with this concept. Green looks healthy, yet purple looks poisonous. When the two colors of food are put together, can green still fully exert the effect of stimulating appetite? To test this theory, the company has created products that reverse typical food colors and package design.

[f(x)Strange]Lab showcases three products—soda, gummy bears and jellybeans—in different packaging. Each concept refers to nostalgic electronic products from the 1990s to 2000s that enable customers to reminisce about good things in the past. In addition to using unusual color palettes, the packages also play with parody, trompe-l'oeil images, and hyperpop references.
